Shift Smart

Healthier Staff. Safer Shifts.

Stronger Teams.

A structured wellbeing programme for organisations with shift-working and night-working teams

built on evidence, designed for real frontline environments.

Shift work places specific and significant demands on the human body.

Disrupted sleep, irregular eating patterns, chronic fatigue and sustained stress don't just affect how your people feel — they directly impact decision-making, safety, absence rates and long-term workforce sustainability.

Generic wellbeing initiatives weren't built for this. Shift Smart was.

Developed in collaboration with NHS teams and delivered to frontline night workers, Shift Smart is a practical, evidence-informed programme that gives shift-based employees the tools to manage fatigue, improve sleep, stabilise energy and protect their long-term health — within the reality of their working patterns.

THE RESULTS

In a pilot with NHS night-shift workers, Shift Smart produced consistent, measurable improvements across every area measured.

Energy 70% of participants reported low or very low energy before the programme.

After Shift Smart, 70%

reported moderate or high energy.

Extreme fatigue was eliminated entirely.

Sleep 80% reported poor or very poor sleep quality before starting.

By the end, 80% reported fair to excellent sleep.

Average sleep duration increased, with 60% achieving 6–7 hours during night-shift periods — up from 20% at the start.

Digestive health 80% of participants reported digestive issues before the programme.

70% reported measurable improvement by the end.

Stress 70% reported stress or anxiety before starting.

60% reported a meaningful reduction by the end.

Confidence and self-efficacy

Not one participant rated themselves highly confident in managing their own wellbeing before Shift Smart.

By the end, 70% did.

"The sleep techniques have helped me improve the quality of my rest both during breaks and at home."

"Understanding protein and sugar spikes has made a big difference."

"I'm eating much better even on difficult stretches of nights."

"I feel more confident and positive — less night-shift depression."

"Yet again had another 6-hour sleep. I have taken note of your advice with timings of food overnight and better choices in general."

WHAT THE PROGRAMME COVERS

Shift Smart blends nutrition science, sleep physiology, stress management and behaviour change into a structured programme your people can actually use.

Fatigue and energy — understanding the difference between tiredness and fatigue, and practical strategies to sustain energy across shifts

Nutrition for shift work — what to eat, when to eat it, and how to stabilise blood sugar and digestion when the body's rhythms are disrupted

Sleep and recovery — evidence-based techniques for improving sleep quality and duration in non-traditional patterns

Stress and resilience — tools for managing emotional fatigue and building long-term psychological sustainability

Identity and self-efficacy — supporting staff to take ownership of their own wellbeing rather than waiting for the system to fix it

HOW IT'S DELIVERED

Shift Smart is delivered through a combination of short audio lessons and live group support — accessible on any device, at any time, designed for people who can't always attend a fixed session.

The programme is tailored to your workforce, your shift patterns and your organisation's capacity. Delivery length and format are agreed at the outset.

Current delivery includes NHS trusts and high-pressure service environments.

FOR YOUR ORGANISATION

The measurable outcomes for organisations include reduced fatigue-related absence and errors, improved focus and engagement across shifts, stronger staff morale and retention, and evidence to demonstrate the impact of your wellbeing investment.
